"Lack of communication/Praise for nursing staff"

About: Aberdeen Royal Infirmary / Cardiology / Coronary Care Unit

(as a relative),

My family member was scheduled for a pacemaker, everything was fine until the consultant came in to discuss things and asked about paperwork, they then explained that the paperwork should have been signed at clinic.

However, we were never told to attend any clinic so I was annoyed that it hadn't been arranged for whatever reason. This was already somewhat of a stressful morning as my family member has dementia and had very little idea of what was going on.

The consultant was already unhappy as I believe 2 people shouldn't have been put on the list for that day as they had commited to teaching in the AM so that was another mess up and as we had an issue with paperwork.

They wasn't sure if we would get done that day and their attitude wasn't the best. I went on to ask what would happen if mt family member didn't get his pacemaker that day and was told he would need to be admitted as he had heart block therefore I was then upset as "heart block" doesn't sound good and had no idea what that meant.

Eventually after a long morning, we were told early afternoon that he wouldn't get done that day and would try get him on the list for the next day.

I would just like to add that I have nothing but praise for the staff nurses in 401, Katie & Mary and also the HCSW, Emma- they were brilliant the whole day as I know it wasn't easy with my family member having dementia and the staff nurse in 109- Dee, equally brilliant, the next day when going down for the pacemaker, my family member got awfully upset and so did I because he was upset but Dee made sure we were both okay and the care received afterwards, could not fault it at all so thank you very much! !

Dear M93

Im sorry that your family member and you had a distressing time during your stay in hospital. The terminology that we use can often be confusing and I apologise for this. It is difficult for me to comment regarding appointments and paperwork but I will feed back to our consultant team that these comments have cause distress to you and your family member and we will try and learn from this to prevent it happening again.

I'm very happy to hear that your care by our nursing team was excellent and I will feed that back to the nurses you have commented on above from the Cardiology Day Case Unit and Ward 109. I hope your Family member has recovered well from their proceedure.

Kind regards

Catriona Sutherland
