"Unclear why Mum was admitted"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres / General Medicine (Wards 9-12)

(as a relative),

My mum was recently admitted to ward 10 Hairmyres for a planned admission. Unfortunately the reason for admission was not made clear to us and since discharge the reason for admission still isn't clear. When we arrived on the ward we were shown to her bed area then myself and my father were asked to leave whilst they made the bed which did not make a lot of sense to me but we agreed.

We then sat in the dayroom for a short period which was very warm and welcoming and much nicer than any other dayroom I have seen before. The CSW was not particularly friendly to myself or my mum and whilst I understand there are huge pressures on staff a smile goes a long way. Unfortunately my mum was not orientated to the ward, offered any water and her name board wasn't filled in.

When my mum was discharged her board was still not filled in. Whilst these are very small things that in my mums case caused no issues as she is relatively well this could cause some difficulties for someone more vulnerable. The nightshift staff however, were very caring compassionate and went out their way to ensure my mum was comfortable. Overall she did not have a bad experience but things could be improved.

Dear Puddle Duck,

thank you for taking the time to post. It is always good to receive feedback as it offers us an opportunity to learn and improve our service. I am disappointed that we did not meet all of you and your mothers expectations whilst she was an inpatient. Your comments will be shared with all the staff in Ward 10 and we will reflect on how we can improve patient and carer experience.

Thank you once again for posting.

regards

Margaret

Dear Puddle Duck

I’m sorry to learn of your mum’s admission to hospital and the mixed experience that you had as a family. Please accept my apology and I would echo Margaret’s earlier response to assure you that we will share this feedback with the Team on Ward 10.

I'm pleased that you found the dayroom comfortable, as we have recently refurbished it, so that patients and families had somewhere pleasant to use, when not at the bedside.

I am however concerned to read that neither your mum, or the family, appear to know why she was admitted, or if there was a diagnosis or plan on discharge. It is fundamentally important that individuals and their families with their permission are provided with clear information and involved in decisions about their care; I’m sorry that doesn’t appear to have happened for your family.

Could you please ask your mum to get in touch so that I can arrange for her admission record to be reviewed and answer any questions she may have (we’d need consent from your mum if you contact us on her behalf).

Please contact our Patient Affairs Manager Christine McNeill on Tel No: 01355 585325 in the first instance.

Kind regards

Susan
