My Mum was found on the floor at home so taken to Norwich University Hospital where it was discovered that she had a broken hip. My Mum also has dementia, experiences hallucinations and becomes anxious and distressed. The nurses in the hospital were good as was the dementia dept. However the doctors gave me daily conflicting information, so one day I'd be told she would be discharged, and then I'd be told she was too unwell, and another time that she'd be sent to rehab. This information contradicted itself daily.
She was eventually discharged to a community hospital without consultation with the family. Whilst in the community hospital Mum's mental health needs are not being recognised. I have been trying to plan her future Care, bearing in mind her dementia but the hospital only seem concerned about her physical needs. They are now going to discharge her home with a carer popping in throughout the day. My Mum is frightened of being alone at night.
When we have children - at the age of 5, they can use the toilet, they can put food in their mouths themselves and they can ask for what they want BUT are they capable of making sensible decisions re: their Care? No Would we leave them at home alone overnight? No. So why are we expecting dementia patients to cope with this?
"Physical health seems to be only concern"
