"She just needed someone to tell her everything was ok"

About: Calderdale Royal Hospital / Older people's healthcare

(as a relative),

My mother was in Royal Calderdale Hospital in December last year and stayed for 9 weeks. She has sadly passed away now but was suffering with mild dementia at the time. My family and I are generally happy with the care she received but a little disappointed with the level of interaction between her and staff, especially the occupational therapists.

I was certainly of the impression that she would be seen regularly but in 9 weeks, as far as I'm aware, she was seen 20 times. My family have spoken about my mum's care often since and we don't have massive concerns, just that it would have been good for there to be more stimulation. I think this would have helped stave off some of the symptoms of her dementia.

She got anxious and worried sometimes, she just needed some time with a nurse or someone to tell her that everything was ok. In the home she went to when she left hospital she got lots of time with staff which was great. I know a home is different to a hospital, but still.

Thank you for your posting and may I offer my condolences on the loss of your mother.

I am very grateful to you for taking the time to feed back on your family’s experience at such a difficult time.

I am sorry you had concerns over her care and that you feel the support was lacking in meeting her specific needs.

I will pass on your comments to Calderdale Royal Hospital who I am sure will be interested in your experience.
