"I feel they were only interested in my surgery"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham / Clinical oncology

(as a service user),

I was under the care of 2 consultant neurosurgeons for the last 5 years being treated for hydrocephalus. I also had a meningioma in my brain both of my neurosurgeons failed to inform me of this over the progressing years. Neither one of them bothered to carry out mri scan of my brain to see if it was growing. They were to busy trying to persuade me to have brain surgery to implant a shunt for hydrocephalus they never bothered to look at the tumour again. I only found out that it was growing when I had an mri scan done at another hospital. My last consultant got hold of the scans and decided to inform me after 4. 5 years that I had a meningioma in my brain and that it was growing. They then told me that they were going to discharge me from their care they made no mention that I would require period scans as part of my aftercare for the tumour.

They never even wrote back to my GP to inform them that the tumour is showing growth my GP knows nothing about this. I feel that I was only worthy of their care when they perform surgery. I am not worthy of follow up care now that I am no longer a candidate for surgery. The only good things in this department were the junior doctors who carried out my lumbar punctures over the years and the nurses who looked after me especially the specialist nurse who looked after me they knew what they were doing. I think the consultants who were looking after should be sent back to medical for retraining I also question the efficiency of the professors and senior consultants in this department who do not seem to know what their junior consultants are doing.
