"Nurse attitude"

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow / Critical Care

(as a relative),

Was in Queen Elizabeth hospital to visit my brother in law and was told I could not visit him at the moment. I asked why I wasn't able to visit and was told you just can't! You can wait in the waiting area! I then asked again what the reasons were for not being able to visit and how long I was expected to wait in the waiting area. I was told my brother in law was being restrained at the moment, he's kicking off again!

I asked if it would be beneficial for me to go in and see if I could help calm him or the situation down with a familiar face as he has delirium and also brain damage. I had 2 of my children with me at the time and was told by the nurse they did not want my children to have to see what was going on. I had fully no intention to take my children into the single room my brother in law was occupying. The nurses attitude was not very friendly or inviting from the start of the conversation. I found them really abrupt and non approachable.

I looked at the staff nurses hello my name is badge to see who I was dealing with. And to my shock horror they asked me if I wanted them to spell their name out for me! What kind of person in their position in the environment they work in speaks to people in that manner. I did speak to the nurse in charge of the ward after I had arranged for someone to take my children so I could go back to visit. They explained that it wasn't a good time for my children to visit and I explained that this was not the issue and I fully understood the protocol but what I couldn't understand was the nurse's bad attitude.

The nurse apologised and took time out to come and speak to me but I don't feel that they should have been the person to take the brunt of my anger and or complaint as it totally wasn't anything to do with them and feel that nurses have a real difficult job to deal with already without having to deal with their colleagues misdoings.

Dear DAIR G

Thank you for taking the time to post on Care Opinion. I am sorry to read about what you experienced at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital. What you have described is not the type of behaviour we expect from any of our staff. All of our patients and visitors should be treated with dignity and respect.

I will share your feedback with the General Manager of the service and ask that they comment on what you have shared here.

Best wishes
Lisa
