"Poor care for my mother"

About: Royal Free Hospital / General surgery

(as a relative),

I visited by mum in a ward at Royal Free. My mother is recovering from an a big operation and had a great service in intensive care but when moved to a recovery ward has been shocked by the levels of nursing care.

I have visited twice and see repeated incidents of buzzers going unanswered when someone needs help and families forced to find nursing staff and get them to help.

Staff shortages may well be one issue but there also seems to be a problem linked to the attitude of some staff on the ward.

A bed pan needed to be changed and when one staff member was asked if they could help, replied that they didn't do that and carried on about her business.

Fair enough but could have said "I don't do that but I will find someone who can".

My mother was an NHS clinician for 20 years and has been shocked by her experience so far.

Dear Valpy,

Thank you for taking the time to write to us about the care your mum is receiving. I'm glad to read that she received great care in intensive care, however the attitude of staff and level of nursing care you have witnessed since she moved wards is not what we expect for our patients.

We would be happy to look into this further for you.

If you would like to take us up on this offer, please email us at rf.patientexperience@nhs.net with some more details.

I hope that your mum is recovering well from her operation.

Best wishes,

Hayley
