"Frustrated at how Opthalmology arrange appointments"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / Ophthalmology

(as the patient),

I am very frustrated at the way in which the above department organise appointments. Originally I had an appointment for both my Visual Fields examination and my appointment with the Consultant on the same day, which made sense. Since then, my appointment with the Consultant has been changed twice, while the Visual Field appointment remains the same. Obviously, this is a major inconvenience and shows no consideration or respect for the patient. As I have to attend annually, I presume I have to put up with this every year. It really is not good enough and extremely inefficient. Not only having to attend the same hospital and the same department on two different days, but to have the appointment changed without any thought is to my mind unacceptable.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear anotherevenmoreannoyed,

Our Senior Manager for this area has ask me to post this response on her behalf -

We are sorry that it has not been possible to have your fields and consultant appointment on the same day. We only have one fields machine at Ayr Hospital and one at Crosshouse Hospital which are in use all day every day. Due to the nature of the test the maximum number that can be done in one day is 13. We do aim where possible to offer both appointments on the same day but often we are not able to achieve this due to the volume of patients attending each clinic. I am also sorry that we have rescheduled appointments. The volume of referrals to our ophthalmic service is such that we are struggling to cope with the demand and when clinics become overbooked it is necessary to reschedule patients to an alternative day. We recognise the inconvenience this causes to our patients and do try to limit this as far as we possibly can. If you wish to call us with your name and address we would be happy to look further into your individual appointments.

If you would like to email Eunice Goodwin at eunice.goodwin@aapct.scot.nhs.uk with your details or phone Eunice on 01563 826222 and we will look into it for you.
