"Hospital hygiene"

About: Royal Bournemouth General Hospital

(as a relative),

I visited Ward 5 yesterday of the Royal Bournemouth Hospital. I accidentally dropped a drink onto the floor. On cleaning up the spill I found the floor to be filthy. Not just dirty but filthy. The nurse helping with the spill cleaning up was embarrassed and said they dry swept. This had clearly not been done under the bed for some time as there was food and a thick layer of dust. The floor needs a good scrub.

May I suggest hospitals start a grading system for wards similar to the food hygiene standards. This could be a benchmark for cleanliness, monitored, reported on and displayed on the entrance to wards. Dirty hospitals effect us all with the rise of MRSA and bacteria resistant to antibiotics basic hygiene should not be ignored.

Dear Salisbury99

Thank you for taking the time to share your observations on the cleanliness of Ward 5 and apologise they have been found lacking in the high standards we aspire to.

I have raised your concerns with the Housekeeping Manager who has asked me to share with you the target standards we work towards:

Monitoring of the Ward is undertaken on a monthly basis, and external auditing also takes place. Monitoring results are of a very high standard for this ward, and any issues raised are corrected within 24 hours. Our cleaning standards are taken from PAS 5748 National Cleaning Standards and Infection Control Team.

The Housekeeping Department provide daily cleaning of the ward, and the supervisory team check the wards on a frequent basis to identify any possible issues. The floors are cleaned once daily, and any further spillages are cleaned by the nursing team.

He has also set out the actions he has implemented following the concern you have raised:

The floors have been cleaned again in the evening.

Housekeeping supervisory team to check the standard of cleanliness on a daily basis.

Housekeeping cleaning schedules to be checked daily, to confirm that all areas of cleaning have been completed and supervisor to sign the areas they have checked.

On-going monitoring of Housekeeping assistants on the ward, and if any are identified as not achieving the cleaning standards we require they will be re-trained to make sure they achieve the required cleaning standards.

We would like to thank you for bringing these issues to our attention, and giving us the opportunity to correct and review possible training issues we may have. The Housekeeping Assistants will be monitored to make sure they are complying with our floor cleaning procedure.

Thank you again for your feedback as it provides us with an opportunity to review our standards and improve our services.

Regards

Patient Engagement Team
