"Planned admission March 2017"

About: Conquest Hospital / Gynaecology

admitted to Mirlees after planned surgery. My stay was uneventful and I was happy with how my surgery went and care from the nurses on the ward was.

My only complaint is the ward layout. I had surgery on a thursday and on friday was encouraged to walk to the ward shower and around the ward to get mobile again. After leaving the bay, whilst holding 2 drains and trying to keep a hospital gown on I was embarrassed to find a queue of people sitting outside the bay, right outside the shower room. Apparently mirlees is also the out patients for early pregnancy. Whilst i admit most of the husbands/partners of the pregnant women did try not stare at a half undressed middle aged woman holding drains full of blood advancing towards them, it was not the most pleasant of experiences. Even over the weekend virtually every time I left the bay people were waiting outside the shower room.

So despite the bay being same sex, once you leave it you may as well be walking through the main corridors of the hospital.

On discharge I did feed my concerns back via the patient survey but I have heard nothing since.

We are sincerely sorry to learn that you had a poor experience on Mirlees ward, due to the layout of facilities, whilst you were being cared for after surgery. May we re-assure you that we fully understand your concern and take this seriously. This is an issue we are aware of, and are keen to resolve as soon as possible.

We are currently drawing up plans for a designated waiting area for patients that attend the ward as outpatients. Unfortunately this will not help you, but will hopefully improve the experience of others in the future.

In the meantime, we are assessing the area again, to see if there is any immediate action we can take to improve the situation.

Thank you very much for your feedback, As a trust we welcome all comments, good or bad, as they help us to monitor and improve our services.

If you would like to discuss your experience further, please do not hesitate to call our Patient Advice & Liaison Service (PALS) and they will co-ordinate communication with the Service Manager for Women's Services.

They can be contacted on 01424 758090 or by email at: esh-tr.PALSH@nhs.net.
