"Vegan food."

About: Queen Elizabeth University Hospital Glasgow

(as a relative),

My sister is in the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Glasgow at the moment. The vegan options are terrible and in general the food is inedible. I know people who work in the hospital and they've said this isn't a one off, the food is indeed awful.

Three days in a row she had Bean Chilli because there was nothing else and today they've presented her with some kind of sloppy mushroom ravioli that most definitely isn't vegan. They know she's vegan. She wasn't even given a choice.

On one of the days I was there someone did come round to take her food order and recommended the pasta because 'pasta has lots of protein in it'! Obviously not an expert in nutrition!

A couple of months ago my mother was in the same hospital and she said the food is inedible.

When are you going to do something about this? Patients are absolutely starved in this hospital.

Dear missusb

Many thanks for taking the time to share your sister’s experience of the vegan food provision.

Please accept my apologies for your sister being served the same dish three days in a row. This is unacceptable and very disappointing as there are a wide selection of vegan main meals available (pasta provencal, spicy bean casserole, potato and bean chilli, vegetable cobbler, vegetable curry, cauliflower and spinach curry), with a minimum stock level of each dish in place to ensure availability at all times. Should a patient who follows a vegan diet not want anything from this menu there are also a number of suitable offerings from other menu’s including salads, baked potatoes and a wide selection of vegetable and rice accompaniments, and some suitable options from the halal menu. Please accept my apologies if your sister was not made aware of these options. Further to receiving your concerns, it is acknowledged that the selection of meals for patients who follow a vegan diet should be reviewed to ensure that we offer a menu which provides an improved range of dishes. Therefore this will be raised at the Food, Fluid and Nutrition group for further consideration.

You are correct that the mushroom ravioli is not a vegan choice. An investigation has taken place to look into why this meal was served to your sister, with actions being identified to prevent this reoccurring.

The comment about pasta/protein was inaccurate and misplaced, and shouldn’t have been made. Again please accept my apologises and reassurance that the appropriate actions will be taken to address this.

To monitor the standard of catering service being provided within the hospital, audits take place monthly within each ward. These audits take into consideration the preparation and quality of the food items, meal service and feedback from patients following their meal. The ward your sister was in was monitored in both‎ May and June with high scores achieved on both occasions with no adverse comments received from patients. In addition a public peer audit took place in May which gave a very favourable outcome of the food that was served.

If you have cause to be within the hospital again and have any ‎concerns with patient catering, please flag your concerns immediately and a member of Facilities Management will meet with you to discuss the issue/s.

Thank you once again for highlighting these issues and we apologise once again for the poor experience that you had.

Kind regards
Mandy Machell, Deputy Site Facilities Manager
