About: Barnet Hospital / Maternity

This was my first pregnancy and I was so scared, how would it go.My waters broke 3 AM on 1st of July,so we went to Triage. But as I was not contracting yet, they sent me home. After I got back home 5Am-started contracting mild, tried sleep, but couldn't sleep because of contractions, which got more intense ,but still not regular...By the 2pm got really painfull contractions, but still just 5minutes apart, but sometimes got a really long and so intense contractions that lasted 3minutes and was not able to stand...Rang triage at 4pm, they said because of my contractions not being 3minutes apart, can't come in yet and they said, that I can't get contractions, which lasts 3minutes,so I guess I am a liar.At 6pm my partner took me to hospital anyway, because he just couldn't stand watching me in so much pain.So back in triage, they wanted to send me home, because still not contracting as required...and full examination could lead to infection as my water broke so early. But my partner said we had to be back in Ward at 8pm as it was nearly 16h since my water broke and we live in Hemel Hemstead,so we would not travel back again. So they agreed to take me in.Till 9pm had so much pain,my body was shaking and it got more intense, but still was dilating slow...4cm,sent me to delivery room.My labour all three stages lasted 7h ,but I am thankful for staff, who delivered my baby, really professional as it was really long labour and birth,as I did not take any epidurals and wanted natural birth. But after delivery I was dissapointed with the hospital's policy.Because I was so sure ,everything is fine with my baby. But aparently some nurse heard ectopic heart beat and on second day I got separated from my baby, she was held in neonatal starlight unit and I could only go breastfeed her and change nappies.I just hated to be apart from her and how about skin to skin bonding? She also had yellow skin,so she had to do blood tests all the time and all those devices stuck to her made me wonder, does it really makes things better for her being there away from me?Also no one from doctors came to update me daily, what is going on and how long should we need to stay here.On day three saw the first doctor.Everyone ,who I was asking ,whats going on,did not seem to know things as they were different departments.Comunication skills very low. Also you could hear midwifes talking about, how busy it is,and that most of them wants to go work somewhere else.Things were progressing very slow as it seemed all the staff is overworked and does not have time for all the patients,so felt like I was just left there to figure out things on my own.At beginning I was breastfeeding wrong as my baby did not attach properly and made my nipples sore.Thank God on day 3 got lucky with experienced person, who looked after my baby at neonatal starlight unit. They showed me the proper way and since then all is so good with my breastfeeding.By the day 4 I already felt depressed. No conditioner aswell, which only took things worse...

Jane

Thank you for taking time to leave feedback at what has been a difficult time for you, your baby and partner. The care you describe in not the standard we wish to give every mother and I m very sorry you were let down on a number of occasions.

I would like to offer you the opportunity to meet one of our senior managers in midwifery so they can better understand how we got it wrong and also give them the opportunity to apologies in person.

If you would like to take this up please email me at rf.patientexperience@nhs.net

I hope your baby is much improved and you are enjoying your time together as a family.

With Best Wishes

Richard
