"Amazing work they did in my time of need from the amazing NHS"

About: University Hospital Ayr / Ophthalmology

(as a service user),

A year ago I had sight saving surgery carried out by Dr MCowan at Ayr hospital. In short I was on the cusp of blindness and the surgeon as noted saved not only my vision but my career by default.

I will always be grateful for his ability and skill. In addition I wish to thank the nurse within the opthalamic department in ayr hospital who stayed with me and arranged for my wife to come in after I received the life changing news

. I was devestated and she was amazing. Lastly the aneathstatist who explained everything to me and kept me calm as I'd had a previous bad experience she used terms I could understand and helped me stay calm despite a very very high blood pressure situation.

Again unfortunately I never noted her name as I was all over the place but she was from Ireland if that helps. I'd like my thanks passed on to all for the amazing work they did in my time of need from the amazing NHS.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear GrCobb,

This is such a poignant story and I can't imagine how much of a roller coaster it must have been. I am so glad the outcome had been so good for you. I will be very pleased to pass your kind words and gratitude to the team, I am sure they will also be pleased to hear about your experience.

Best wishes,

Eunice

I realise its taken me a year to respond and make my gratitude clear but I had always intended on making it known how important the teams work and professionalism were to both me and to my family. I realise now on checking my original post that I couldn't even spell the surgeons name correctly - it was Dr McGowan.

It is very important to me to know that the additional team members are thanked as much as Dr McGowan who has incredible skill. As noted the staff nurse who realised by just looking at me that I had just received terrible news and was panicking and who helped me to calm down and the aneathstatist who came and sat with my wife and I and kept me calm as well, their input beyond the surgeons phenomenal skill cannot be underestimated.

My BP on my original admittance initially at xhse whilst completing a nightshift a few hours previous - working for another emergency service - was registered as 220/186 by rights I probably should have had a stroke or worse too! The fact was for the surgeon to do his work so well needed the other team members to function above and beyond to keep that as low as possible for the duration thanks for everything.

They all saved my sight and kept me in my job as a result without which my family would not be in as good a place as they are today.

Thank you again for your post. I passed this on and the team are aware of how you felt about your care. We also managed to identify Dr McGowan, so thank you.

Everything you have told us just emphasises how important both our sight and the Ophthalmology team are. It is wonderful to hear how positively this has impacted on you and your family. I am also sure it is also our gain, keeping one of our emergency service team.

Best wishes,

Eunice
