"Disappointed with antenatal care"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / Maternity

I am pregnant with my 1st baby and have unfortunately been referred to an extra scan twice. 1st time was early in my pregnancy due bleeding and was referred for an early scan by gp and was told i would be called within 24h for the scan and should have scan within 48h. Didnt get a call and chased up myself and was told i didnt really need a scan but that i will get one anyway but not within 48h. In the scan i was advised i was already 10 weeks pregnant and not 7 as i thought.

Now had my 25week app with my community midwife who said they heard a couple of drops in baby's heartbeat so they sent us to the hospital. We were seen about 7pm and heartbeat was checked again and all seemed ok. However was told that they will need a doctors opinion. We were then left at the ward to wait for doctor. Doctor finally came to see us around 11pm and another midwife checked baby's hearbeat and said it all sounded ok but that it would be good if we could come in for a scan the next day (today) just to make sure. We were sent home after midnight.

I was due to get a call from the scan unit in the morning. As i had not heard anything by 10:30 i called the ward who advised me to call the scan unit. Called them and they had not received a request for me. So called ward again and was told to wait for couple of hours and if had not heard anything then call in again so they can send another request to scan unit.

I had a call back within an hour to be told and a scan wasnt really needed but that i will booked in but not as an urgency.

I have today had to cancel my work appointments as i was told i would be seen today for the scan. My baby is of course more important than my work but being told different things by the midwives it is frustrating to have cancelled today and then to be advised that i won't have scan until 3 days.

Just seems that right hand does not know what the left hand is doing and all this has now caused me unnecessary stress. As said this is my 1st baby and everything is new to me. It does make you worry though being told the scan is just to be sure and then to be told that you dont need one. This definitely has not put my mind to rest and left me feeling anxious especially as this is 2nd time i have been messed around.

Thank you for taking the time to share feedback.

I'm really sorry to read of the poor experience you have had in our antenatal clinic and appreciate how this will have caused you unnecessary stress.

I know our Head of Midwifery will be keen to investigate this and speak to the staff involved in your care.

I'd be grateful if you could email rsc-tr.communications@nhs.net with the full details, so that we can start looking into your experience.

In the meantime, please be assured that your comments have already been shared with our Head of Midwifery.

Once again, thank you for your message.
