"Hysterectomy"

About: North Devon District Hospital / Gynaecology

(as the patient),

I was admitted to North Devon District Hospital. I was having a hysterectomy. At this point, the specialist wasn't sure if they could do it by keyhole surgery or an abdominal operation. I was very well cared for pre-operative and from when I came back to the recovery room the staff were very attentive and caring even though there was a delay in getting a bed.

I went back to the ward early that evening and within the hour I had had tea and toast and was feeling quite comfortable. The specialist came around shortly after and informed me I had had a full hysterectomy by keyhole, which was great as the recuperation is much shorter.

That evening, the nurse took my blood pressure every hour and I was constantly checked and observed. The Ward that I was on was the King George V ward. The ward had been refurbished fairly recently I would think as everything was clean and in a good state of repair. I had a comfortable night, being checked on through the night. The following morning, due to the fact that I was reasonably pain free, the specialist, Mr Eskandar said that I could go home. I totally recommend Mr Eskandar. He explains everything so well and has got the time for you. I felt I was in good hands.

24 hours after my operation I was discharged.

I would just like to say a Big Thank you to all the incredibly efficient, hard working, lovely staff who made my stay, short as it was, very comfortable. All of you are such an asset to the hospital and I feel that, living near Barnstaple from birth, we are immensely lucky to have such a fantastic hospital. Keep up the great work and again so many thanks to you all at King George V.

Dear Gill

Thank you for taking the time to share your positive feedback with us. The thought of having an operation can be an anxious time, so it is reassuring to know that your hysterectomy could be undertaken by keyhole surgery, rather than an abdominal procedure.

I am sorry that you experienced a delay in being transferred to a bed, but am pleased to hear that the brief time you spent on King George V ward was very comfortable. The newly refurbished wards at the North Devon District Hospital are bright and clean with modern facilities which enable the nursing staff to provide excellent care for patients, and its good to know that the ward staff were kind and caring, and that they were attentive to your post-operative needs during the night.

It is also pleasing to hear that your specialist, Mr Eskandar, explained everything fully to you in an unrushed manner, and that you felt satisfied with your care. It is wonderful that you could return home so soon after your operation and I do hope that you have now fully recovered from your hysterectomy and are able to get on with your everyday life.

I have forwarded on your kind comments about your recent experience to Mr Eskandar and to King George V ward where they will be greatly appreciated and shared with the staff involved in your care.

Thank you for referring to the North Devon District Hospital as ‘fantastic’, we are certainly very lucky to work here. I do hope that you do not have to visit us again too soon in the future!

Kind regards

Jayne
