I arrived at WCH disgruntled because I had to leave home at 5 a.m. travelling from southern Cumbria for day surgery (rather than having it at NCI as previously). First impressions were poor: inadequate signage, dirty, broken public lavatory in old wing. However, I was quickly impressed by the helpfulness of staff. Staff arriving for work (still in coats) were quick to ask if I needed assistance. Reception staff were friendly and helpful, and clinical staff were communicative, friendly and caring.
Having my own proper cubicle for the day was very good. As a coeliac I was very impressed to be given gluten-free toast, which arrived on a tray with a choice of jam and a pot of tea - as good as being a private patient.
My main nurse was exceptional, everything you want from a nurse: caring, considerate, communicative, amusing and attentive.
Just a shame it's so far away!
