"Awaiting TURP"

About: University Hospital Monklands / Urology (Ward 6)

(as the patient),

After many visits to GP ended up in A+E with urine retention, I can tell you the wait in A+E was not a positive experience. This all occurred back in April, I was fitted with a catheter and sent on my merry way, only to attend my GP the next day, the Catheter had blocked, so back to A+E, eventually admitted to ward and catheter refitted, a few days of major discomfort, followed by discharge and informed I would need TURP and this would be 12 week wait. 12 weeks later still no sign of date for op however I have been for pre opp assessment, which if you ever get, means absolutely nothing with regards to being an indicator that you are actually getting near to a time that you would be contacted for your opp, I have called the Urology but information I received was a bit disappointing, I had set my target on the 12 weeks or at least somewhere near this period, I do understand my particular case may not have a high priority as it may not end my life, however it is impacting upon my work my mental health and physical well being. Have you ever sat at work at your desk and the sodding tap opens? ? ? I can assure you not a pleasant experience. Any way I have been informed that it will likely be end of August into September before I will have the op, given that I already had been informed of a 12 week wait I am not confident that this new wait will actually result in any operation.

All in all so far not very positive.

Dear Givemeabreak

I am sorry to read about the health issues you are having and the length of time you have been waiting for your Urology procedure and would apologise that we have been unable to provide your surgery within the 12 week treatment time guarantee..

We do have capacity issues at the moment within Urology which means that some of our patients are waiting longer than 12 weeks for their procedure. I am aware of the frustration and additional anxiety this causes patients and we are working to address this.

We have two Locum Consultants starting with us during July and August which will allow us to put on additional theatre lists to reduce the length of time that patients are waiting for their procedure.

If you would like to contact me by email at Lynn.mctavish2@lanarkshire.scot.nhs.uk or on 01236 748748 x4135 to give me your details, I would be happy to look into this further for you.

Kind Regards

Lynn McTavish
