"So upset and disappointed"

About: Queen Alexandra Hospital / Paediatrics

I was at the QAH on Saturday morning with my 10 month old daughter and was seen by the doctors on the Children's Assessment Unit. I had been there 2 nights previously with her after she was referred by our GP for high temperature, ear infection and nasty case of conjunctivitis. Thankfully we were discharged with strong antibiotics and eye ointment that night.

On Thursday I was seen by a doctor who was brilliant. Very friendly, great with my daughter, and in general polite and courteous which is what I would expect. We had an appointment today at 10am for a checkup but they said If Poppy's condition did not improve or I was worried to ring and bring her back in in the meantime. Which is what happened this morning - after a restless night and no improvement I rang in and was able to take her to be seen.

Unfortunately one of the doctors ho saw her the second time was so rude in general in the way that they spoke to me, they made me feel like an idiot and that I was majorly over reacting - that the hospital was "not a hotel" and that I "can't just leave" my daughter here "for them to take care of whilst mums get sleep". Having not had any previous children, this is my first experience of having a poorly baby. I was worried and I am also not stupid, the reason I brought her back into hospital is because they had said to me on the Thursday evening that I could, should I be worried and there be no improvement in her condition. Might I also point out that written on the discharge letter is a sentence saying that the invitation for her to come back remains open for 48hrs. I also expressed to the doctor that I had struggled to put in eye ointment by myself, their response to me was condescending and downright rude.

I made my feelings perfectly clear to this doctor at the time and am thoroughly upset and angry about being spoken to in this way. I feel that not only has the doctor criticised my actions as a person, but as a mother as well. My baby is the most precious thing to me and the fact that she was even referred to Hospital in the first place is a pretty serious thing in my eyes.

I had my daughter at the QAH last august and couldn't have been happier with my experience there. This doctor has thoroughly ruined the reputation of your hospital in my eyes and I would be reluctant to go there again after this.

I am sorry to hear of your experience with your daughter and the upset this has caused you. Your description of events would certainly not what we would want for our patients or relatives.

We would welcome the opportunity to ask a senior member of the Team involved to discuss this with you. If this is something you would be interested in then please contact the Patient Advice and Liaison Service (PALS) on 0800 917 6039 or by email at PHT.PALS@porthosp.nhs.uk so that they can raise your concerns with the appropriate person.

I do hope your daughter is making a good recovery and wish her well for the future.

Kind regards.

Debbie
