"Friendly, professional, and accommodating"

About: The Maidstone Hospital / Gynaecology

(as a service user),

Recently moved into West Kent. Have a long history of recurrent miscarriage. Experienced bleeding in latest pregnancy. Contacted EPU and was directed to GP as the EPU is not commissioned to take self referrals. GP referred to EPU. GP reception who fed back appointment details didn't give specific site, only date and time - on day had to rush from one hospital site to the other (once again only recently local).

The staff were fantastic - called between the sites to let them know that I was on my way, engaged with me from the moment I walked in (which brought down my stress levels), they were friendly, professional and accommodating. In short, they provided a great service to someone who was on entering the hospital a little stressed out.

Feedback to Commissioner: Suspect a triage tool but when you experience recurrent miscarriage, and are experiencing a threatened miscarriage, it doesn't make for good patient experience and clearly results in additional handovers which cause problems. GPs are difficult to access. I didn't take an appointment but I assume that others would, in which case is this best use of GP time or could a support role be added to the EPU to triage. Secondly, I was advised initially GP or A&E. If I didn't have history, I would have probably approached A&E with the bleed - which also would not be ideal.
