"Weekend illness"

About: Borders General Hospital NHS 24 / NHS 24 (111 service)

(as the patient),

Trust me to become unwell at the weekend when my GP is closed! From Friday evening I developed a sore throat that got worse throughout Saturday. At 11: 30pm I was struggling and was left with no choice but to phone NHS24. A busy Saturday night, I'm sure they were thrilled I was calling with my sore throat! After being triaged by the call handler and nurse, I was advised that I needed to be seen by a doctor and therefore made my way down to Borders Emergency Care Services at the Borders General Hospital. Within 2 hours of my initial call I am back home with my tonsillitis diagnosis and some antibiotics. Thanks to the staff at NHS24 and Dr L Anderson at Borders Emergency Care Services for being so nice and treating me quickly on what I am sure is a very busy time for you all with much sicker patients than me.

Dear leopardth93

Sorry to learn of your illness and I do hope that you are on the way to a full recovery. Thank you for sharing your experience on Care Opinion.

NHS 24 does receive a large call volume at the weekends, however we are here to help should a patient feel that their symptoms cannot wait until their own GP surgery opens on the Monday. I am pleased you received the required antibiotics to manage your Tonsillitis and I do wish you well.

Your story is a good example of services working together to provide timely care for patients. I am sure my colleagues within NHS Borders will also be pleased to read your positive comments.

Should you wish to provide any specific feedback to NHS 24, then I would be pleased to hear from you directly. I can be contacted on 0141 337 4582 or by email at patientaffairs@nhs24.scot.nhs.uk

Thanks again for taking the time to get in touch.

With kind regards

Shona

Dear leopardth93,

Thank you so much for taking the time to let us know of your experience at the Out of Hours Service in the Borders General Hospital. Please do not ever worry about calling for help during the time that your practice is closed as we would much rather help you to feel better earlier, particularly when symptoms are deteriorating as yours were.

I'm really delighted that between our colleagues at NHS 24 and Dr Anderson and her team, we were able to make you feel better quickly. I very much hope that you are now recovering well and that this weekend coming is more enjoyable than the last one!

I will forward your kind words to Dr Anderson and the team working with her and I know that they will be very grateful to you for taking the time to feedback on your experience.

Best wishes,

Lynn
