I have Ulcerative Colitis and became unwell over the weekend.
I already had an appointment with my GP on the Tuesday so waited until then
My GP examined me and confirmed she thought it was a flare up of my UC and advised me to phone the GI specialist nurse. My GP said she would be out of the surgery that afternoon at a meeting but would leave word with another Dr in case I needed some more advice.
I telephoned the GI nurse and she booked me into see her that same afternoon and advised me to bring a stool sample. When I arrived I was examined, blood pressure, temp, and had blood taken. Michelle the nurse advised me to increase my medication and she would have results from stool sample and blood by Friday.
I had a telephone call from Michelle on the Friday to say it was definitely a flare up of my UC and after discussing options for treatment she said a prescription would be left for me in the Endoscopy Dept.
I collected the prescription which was waiting for me but when I took it to the hospital pharmacy I was told I could not have it dispensed there. My friend had to then take me around a couple of chemists before I could get the prescription, I was feeling quite unwell so this was not ideal, this is my only complaint but I wonder why I could not have it dispensed at hospital pharmacy as no reason was given.
I had another call from Michelle yesterday with an appointment for next Tuesday to have my blood checked again.
To conclude this long statement I just want to say a big thank you to Michelle and my GP for their caring approach to me. People complain easily enough about the NHS but don't compliment it when things go right which is the majority of the time.
The GI Nurses in the Victoria Hospital are superb! !
"Thank you for your caring approach"
