"Why is there carpet in the surgical wards?"

About: Crosshouse Hospital / General Surgery

(as a relative),

why have surgical wards still have carpets on their floors - and not clean looking ones either. I have not encountered this in any hospital in Glasgow for over 20years - this must be a big infection control issue.

Also corridors cluttered with equipment and dayroom we were asked to sit in was cluttered with equipment and untidy - gives a very poor impression.

I respond initially to most of the posts and ensure they are passed to the appropriate team whether they are compliments, observations or grumbles. It is important to make sure all issues are addressed and I try to encourage that to happen for all the posts as required.

Dear coastalgirl,

I have had several discussions with staff in each area involved in this topic in response to your post. (Senior staff in our Infection Control department, Domestic Services, Estates and Capital Planning).

I hope you can be patient with me as I don't have the complete response as yet but am getting there.

I will post your response as soon as possible and I am sorry it is taking so long.

Kind regards,

Eunice

Dear coastalgirl,

I wanted to explore your question with all the appropriate people in NHS Ayrshire and Arran. Our head of infection control told me this:

"Whilst there is very little evidence around the infection risk associated with carpets which are cleaned on a regular basis current NHS guidance on infection control in the built environment advocates that flooring must be” seamless, impermeable, slip resistant, easily cleaned and appropriately wear resistant”

Our Hotel Services Manager also added

"From a Domestic Services point of view; we have a carpet shampooing programme in place and should there be an incident where the carpet required shampooed out with this we would react to that".

The Assistant Director for Estates and Capital Planning also added

" All carpets in key clinical areas will be replaced in time as part of our upgrade/refurbished programme. It is worth noting that this is dependent upon funding being made available and appropriate planning to access to the areas to carry out the work. We currently have an estates backlog maintenance prioritised list which includes the removal of carpets from key clinical service areas. This included the replacement of carpets or similar type floor covering with anti slip Vinyl floor covering in line with current NHS guidance. Should our Infection Control Team advise us of any high risk environmental infection control risks at any time, we rectify this by using a revenue budget".

I would like to add that this is a very important area and I thank you for highlighting it to us. I hope this alleviates your concerns and shows that we have this situation high on our radar too.

Thank you and best wishes,

Eunice.
