"Treatment for Schizophrenia"

About: Central And North West London NHS Foundation Trust / Inpatient mental health care

(as a service user),

I was hospitalised in North wick park hospital. I had missed my medication for 1and 1/2 months. As soon as your admitted the hospital should have prescribed some drugs but they didn't. As a result of this I have more negative symptoms than when I first ill.

On my first admission I was prescribed with sulphide which suited me. But on my second admission they wanted to observe me without drugs, which was the wrong thing to do, as more of your brain cells die. I was in hospital for two months which was too long.

The staff were not very comforting, they didn't interact with the patients, which was a shame.

I'm really sorry you had a bad experience and I'm sorry staff didn't talk to you as they should.

Mental health treatment is complex and it can often take some time to establish the correct medication and dose for individuals. When people are admitted, there is an assessment process, part of which is observing patients without medication and talking to them about their concerns. This allows us to find out more about people’s symptoms, and it helps us to identify what medication will help them to feel better and agree a care plan with the person. Our aim is always to discharge people as soon as they are stable and we have plans in place to support and maintain their recovery in the community.

Feedback like this is very useful to learn from. I would be happy to meet with you to talk about this further or I can give you a call. Please email your contact details to gail.burrell@nhs.net or you can call 020 8869 5480.
