"I was always sceptical about HGH ..."

About: Hexham General Hospital

What I liked

I was always sceptical about HGH after my father was sent home whilst suffering an MI some 2 years ago, only to be readmitted the following day and diagnosed correctly. However, my recent experience has proved that for me Hexham General has proven itself at competence and care. I was referred to ECC with leg pain following a fall some weeks before.

It was thought initially that it was a muscle injury. Following routine bloods and an ultrasound it was discovered that I had DVT. I was treated initially on the department and followed up in haemotology outpatient clinic. The Doctor and Nursing staff on ECC were exceptional (sorry for not noting names), the receptionist was very friendly and attentive, and I was seen within 20 mins. The 'triage' staff nurse was very nice and carried out the necessary tests - I did have quite an anxious wait in the treatment room (but understood that they would be waiting for blood results). The two ladies in ultrasound were fantastic, they really put me at ease and explained the procedure. Despite the shock of being diagnosed with DVT the staff displayed a sense of calm and professionalism. And the pleassnt surroundings of the hospital add to that experience. I was allowed to use the telephone and given a cup of tea, leaving with all the required medication, a follow up appointment and contact numbers for any problems. I was expecting to have to get a taxi, but a hospital driver was contacted and he took me home. All in all a very good service. May I add my additional respect and thanks to the consultant and the nursing staff at the haemotology clinic, and the anticoagulant nurses - with whom I continue my treatment over the coming months. As a postscript can I also pay my regards to the Doctor who is continuing my father's care. The doctor is I think an exceptional Doctor and always a pleasure to meet.
