About: Northern General Hospital

What I liked

I was referred by my GP as an emergency: I was seen promptly in A&E and then admitted to a ward on Vickers. I hadn't been in hospital for some years and I was pleasantly surprised by how clean the ward was and how good the food was! The medical staff were friendly and professional and took time to explain every aspect of my treatment and the nurses went out of their way to make sure I was comfortable. The ward seemed to be well-run with good communication between the staff.

What could be improved

I was sent for two ultrasound scans (arranged by ward staff) and that department seemed to be in another hospital as far as looking after patients went. I, and a number of other patients, were left waiting in a busy corridor for hours with no information and nothing to eat or drink. When I was finally seen the member of staff was curt and dismissive.

After I'd had the first scan, I was told they'd run out of time to do the second and I was sent back to the ward! Since by that point it was clear I was in no danger of imminent death, I discharged myself rather than spend another day waiting in a corridor.

Parking is an absolute joke - there's nowhere near enough of it and it's expensive. People who are already ill/in pain do not need the stress of circling the car parks in the hope that a space might appear
