The reception on arriving at the hospital was warm and informative the area was clean and inviting with comfortable chairs. My several appointments have been on time, in preparation for surgery, the consultant explained all options in a clear and jargon free way enabling us to have an open discussion about positives of the operation and the risks. This enabled me with their help to make an informed choice. On the day of my surgery I was admitted to my room by a caring nursing practitioner, who explained about the facilities, taking details and checking my vital signs. They took time to explain, showing a warmth and compassion, with respect for my dignity and any questions I had. Prior to the surgery the surgeon explained the procedure again and we agreed to proceed. At various points prior to surgery my details were checked and validated. The ride to theatre was calm with a sensitivity to my feeling a bit anxious. The process of anaesthetic was again calm with explanation as to what was happening.

So off to sleep I went. The surgeon, their surgical team completed a complicated operation and I then remember being safely back in my room. The nursing practitioners continued to monitor and care for me through the recovery with that compassion and respect I had experienced previously. The consultant visited and explained about the surgery and how well the operation had gone. The food was excellent, which I was ready for. Recovery began with the help of the physiotherapist, who was patient and supportive encouraging my tentative early steps and exercises. I was able to be discharged the next day with clear follow up instructions and information as to contacts should there be a need. The community nursing practitioners visits were organised. I am now nine weeks post surgery, progressing well. My follow up at the hospital has been to the same high standard as before, seen on time in a very warm, inviting environment. The surgery sight has healed well with no complications. I found the entire service at this hospital to be patient centred, with a transparent open dialogue. All the staff I met showed compassion and respect.
