"Mother's hospital stay"

About: Queen Elizabeth Hospital / General surgery

My mother was recently a patient on Ward 26. She was in hospital for 7 weeks after a fall, she dislocated and broke her shoulder (it was replaced), broke a bone in her pelvis and broke her knee. The majority of staff my Mother had contact with were kind and compassionate, however several were not in particular the student nurses. The ward appeared to be understaffed, and on several occasions she had to wait over half an hour to be taken to the toilet ( in my opinion this is totally unacceptable). Getting ready for bed, getting dressed or showered in the morning also seemed a problem, particularly showering. Communication was poor with myself and my father, in fact the staff rarely communicated with us at all. Whilst most people we came across during my Mother's stay were working incredibly hard I feel the care she and her family received was less than adequate.

We're sorry to hear about your experience and that you were unhappy with your mother’s care at the hospital. What you describe certainly falls short of what we expect for all our patients.

We'd like to understand a little more about what happened so we can look into this for you. If you'd be interested in doing this, you can contact our PALS (Patient Advice and Liaison Service) team on 0800 953 0667 or pals@ghnt.nhs.uk
