I am a student with a commonly held fear of hospitals. I was informed at the end of April that I required an EUA (Examination Under Anaesthesia). I slowly drove myself mad while waiting for this and developed a huge fear of general anaesthetic to the point where I did not believe I was going to wake up albeit was a very minor procedure.
I would just like to thank every single member of staff at Good Hope who I had the pleasure of meeting from my initial pre-op assessment to the actual day of surgery. At my pre-op, both of the nurses I met were so kind, light hearted and understanding - it was the first time I felt at ease since discovering I needed this examination.
A few days before I was to be admitted, I was very distressed and so decided to phone the anaesthetist department at Good Hope. A very kind receptionist phoned me back and listened to me for a good 15-20 minutes about my concerns and fears on a Friday afternoon; which in my books is a very considerate thing to do. She then went on to organise a meeting with my anaesthetist the day before surgery which was absolutely superb.
My anaesthetist Dr. Kath was fantastic, I felt a lot more at ease meeting with her and knowing the person who was going to look after me. The same day as meeting her a nurse also gave my partner a number which I could call that night if I was feeling anxious.
On the actual day, all of the nurses were fantastic and allowed my mother to stay with me which helped a lot. I've seen a couple of complaints about the nurses gossiping with each other but, I quite like it, it makes everything seem more relaxed. I don't remember much in recovery but I was, again, looked after by a lovely nurse who listened to me ramble on about things I cannot remember! All in all, my experience was amazing considering the circumstances. Nothing was too much and the nickname 'No Hope' is ridiculous, everyone was so kind to me. Thank you.
