I was sent to the Ambulatory Dept. by my doctor. (I had been feeling unwell for some time but my condition had suddenly taken a turn for the worse. I am normally an active and busy 78 year old. Whatever it was that I had had reduced me to a shambling wreck who could take only a few steps at a time before having to rest.)
I underwent a number of tests and was then seen by a Consultant. The Consultant homed in on a transatlantic flight I had taken in March/April of this year. The diagnosis was a deep vein thrombosis which had found its way into my lungs.
I was moved later in the day to an assessment ward where I spent the next 48 hours undergoing a series of tests (CT scans x 2; an X-ray: bloods x 2: and about 7 litres of saline fluid.) These, in addition to the constant monitoring of my blood pressure, oxygen intake and heart beat.
The report I received on discharge was the most detailed account of my interior that I have ever read!
I have thought long and hard as to whether I could have been cared for better on the ward and in the radiology department. The answer is a resounding no!
The dedication, commitment and professionalism of all the people who cared for me was extremely impressive. I have always been a big fan of the NHS and have no time for media
"know-alls" who set out to regale the public with negative and half-baked views about the organisation.
Three days after leaving hospital, I can report that I am no longer feeling like death warmed up, but a lot like my old self.
Thank you Northampton General, you did me proud!
