"Traumatic early pregnancy experience"

About: Lister Hospital / Maternity

I was recently told of a missed miscarriage (at 12 weeks) with fetal demise at less than six weeks. I had called the EPU for advice three weeks prior due to spotting and told this was most likely breakthrough bleeding and to go to A&E if I started bleeding profusely - I was not offered a scan or any further advice. After a further week of spotting I went to my GP who organised an urgent scan. I was called by the EPU that afternoon to arrange my 'urgent' scan - the next appointment was in one week. Absolutely disgusting. I then went for my appointment to be told the embryos did not have a heartbeat and were measuring six weeks. As I had previously had a private scan at eight weeks which showed a six week embryo it was clear there had been fetal demise. Unfortunately I was told I would have to have another scan in ten days to confirm this, the sonographer would not take into account the private scan and this was policy (it is in NICE guidelines, but these are guidelines). At this point I had been carrying dead embryos for six weeks, with no sign of natural miscarriage, and the Lister wanted me to wait a further ten days! When I called the EPU to see if I could have a referral letter to go private I was told they did not do this, and would I like to cancel my follow up scan as these appointments are very precious and needed for pregnant women! Revolting. Throughout this entire process I have felt that I was not listened to, I was given no further information on erpc, medical management etc even though this would be the inevitable outcome. This whole experience has been extremely traumatic and will undoubtedly affect my enjoyment of any subsequent pregnancies.

I have now decided to pay for a private ERPC (at over two thousand pounds) as (i) I cannot emotionally wait for an additional ten days, with no guarantee as to when any required surgery would be scheduled, and (ii) I have no wish to ever deal with the Lister hospital again.
