"The staff I have dealt with have ..."

About: Darlington Memorial Hospital

What I liked

The staff I have dealt with have been polite, courteous, caring and respectful when I have been able to speak to them

What could be improved

My mother has had added stress following major surgery due to:

Lack of staff on ward 32

Drip stand placed on opposite side to cannulated hand which led to her pulling this out during the night and spilling the fluids into her bedding. Surely common sense would have seen the drip stand placed on the same side as the cannulation. A physio whom my mum speaks highly of for his manner and care of her remedied this where ward staff hadn't. Surely again a sign of overstretched staff. This took several hours to be changed again obviously due to staffing shortages or possible deployed? Whilst visiting my to mum had to wait nearly an hour for pain relief - this felt like a lifetime to my mum who was understandably in alot of pain and compounded by the Patient Administered Analgesia pump alarm sounding as it was empty. We eventually found out ourselves how to switch this off and did so every 5 mins until the morphine syringe was changed.

I found it incredible to find one nurse covering the entire ward on her own whilst I was there visiting. I would like to express however that she was very nice, acted professionally and saw to it that my mum received the care she needed once I had her found her and expressed my concerns - thank you for this. I have also since been informed that other concerns that I raised have also been addressed.

Anything else?

I do not wish at all to be seen to be complaining about the individual staff - the issues I am raising are created by an organisation and individuals have little choice other than to try their very best to carry out patient care and try to maintain patient dignity and saftey within the framework created by the organisation that employs them.
