"It was the best experience in the time he’s had to be admitted to hospital."

About: Royal Aberdeen Children's Hospital / Community Child Health

(as a parent/guardian),

My 2 year old son had to undergo a bronchoscopy  at Day case unit at Royal Aberdeen Children’s Hospital.

He attended at his admission time of 8am and was promptly taken to his bay by nurse Faith who was very professional and very attentive. The procedure was explained thoroughly and carefully by the nurse, anaesthetist and Dr Osman consultant paediatrician. He was given some emla cream to apply to his hand and then allowed to play which he was happy with. The Time came to take him to theatre. He was happy saying bye to everyone etc, got to the room and he freaked a little bit at the view of machines, wires etc. The anaesthetist allowed him to go away and return last once had some sedatives.

I thought this was very good and professional as they could have just told him to return a different day. He got this medication which made him very “drunk” and woozy (Funny to watch at the time). He got taken down by nurses and the operating team were absolutely amazing – dr brooker even did the puzzle with him which was I thought very good to keep him occupied whilst anaesthiea was given. He was in recovery and came back within 2 hours quite tired and drowsy the nursing care was amazing and was allowed on his way by 5pm with detailed discharge advice and paperwork.

It was the best experience in the time he’s had to be admitted to hospital. Thank you to all at Day Case unit but particularly to Faith, DR Brooker, and the anaesthetist (didn’t get his name).

Dear Stu27

Thank you so much for your feedback about your family's experience in the Day Case Unit. Coming into hospital is a really frightening experience for anybody, and especially if you are only two years old. It sounds like the team did a really great job in preparing your son for theatre and also supported him when he had a change of heart in the anesthetic room. I was so glad we were able to plan for theatre later in the day and it's great to hear the doctors and nurses used imaginative ways to distract your son.

It means so much to staff to receive positive feedback and I will make sure Faith, Dr Brooker and Dr Osman see your story, and will also print a copy to put into theatre so the anesthetic staff see it too.

I hope your son has fully recovered and thank you again for your feedback.

Caroline (Clinical Nurse Manager RACH)
