"Breaking Bad News"

About: Cumberland Infirmary

On 12th May my father attended the GI department at the Cumberland Infirmary. He was coming for results following an upper GI endoscopy and CT scan. My mother and I were with him.

The surgeon was empathetic and skilled at breaking the bad news. The surgeon gave Dad and Mum all the time they needed. They certainly laid to rest the archetypal surgeon tag of not been able to talk to their patients.

I am most grateful for the way Dad was treated with compassion and care in this highly emotional time.

Thanks also to the nurse specialist who was hovering helpfully in the background.

Dear Mr Western

Thank you for taking the time to leave a comment on our website, especially at what must be a very stressful time for the family.

I am very pleased to hear that your father received such compassionate care from the surgeon and that he gave your parents all the time they needed to process what they had just been told.

I will make sure that the Upper GI team who were on duty on the 12th May are aware of your feedback.

Our thoughts are with your father at this emotional time.
