"Waiting for four months"

About: University Hospital Hairmyres

(as the patient),

a number of years ago I underwent tests for oesophageal motility and acid reflux testing

I have recently been re referred to have these tests again - I say recently I have been waiting 4 months and still no appointment

As I have already had these tests in the past should priority not be given to returning patients. I understand that it is a busy service but I think that waiting this long on a test is unreal

as I remember the test was ok.

how long is the waiting list now

the last time I called to ask no one was in the department and the message stated that staff are only in on certain days why is it no longer a full week clinic this obviously has an impact on appointing patients and I know myself there are certain days in the week that I can not attend appointments due to care commitments

If someone could shine some light on the situation I don't want to make a formal complaint about this as I know staff are hard working and under a lot of strain but that puts patients in the same situation

Dear ongoing,

I’m sorry to hear that you need further investigations with the Oesophageal Laboratory and the waiting time you are experiencing.

I appreciate that waiting for investigations and indeed the results can be an anxious time, I can only apologise for the waiting time you have experienced to date.

You’ve obviously been further frustrated by the lack of communication when trying to contact us and again I would apologise for this. We’ve experienced some difficulties with staffing levels over the past few months which have impacted on waiting times; whilst I’m unable to go into further detail, I’d like to reassure you that referrals are reviewed to prioritise patients according to their clinical requirements. If you feel your condition has worsened I’d ask that you consider discussing this with your GP.

In the meantime I’d be happy to look into your circumstances and whilst I won’t be able to prioritise your case, I should be able to give you an idea of when you’ll be seen for testing and take your caring commitments into consideration when trying to arrange your appointment.

Please contact Christine McNeill our Patient Affairs Manager with your details on Tel No: 01355 585325 if you’d like to take up this offer.

Kind regards
