"Breastfeeding Support - baby with tongue tie"

About: University Hospital Wishaw / Maternity Care (Wards 21-24)

(as the patient),

I have a wee boy, now 16 days old, who was born with a tongue tie that was immediately diagnosed by my community midwife upon discharge from hospital. After trying to breastfeed him unsuccessfully, my husband and I asked for a referral to have his frenulum separated at Wishaw general and the procedure was carried out yesterday. Prior to the frenotomy, I was using nipple shields, was in agony and the wee one wasn't gaining weight because he couldn't latch properly - despite feeding almost constantly. Now however, he is latching himself and I am almost pain free and he is settled in between feeds. I wanted to write to highlight the absolutely amazing service we have received from NHS Lanarkshire, especially the breatfeeding support team at Wishaw general and the midwives at Rutherglen health centre. The level of support that we have received has been unbelievable and I really just wanted to say thank you!

Good Morning LTay2017,

Thank you for this excellent feedback about your experience of the support you and your new baby son have received by our staff, especially the Community Midwives team based in Rutherglen and our Breastfeeding Support Service team. Tongue tie doesn't always cause challenges with breastfeeding, however, when it does it can be a really difficult time and it sounds like your Community Midwife made a quick referral for you both to our breastfeeding clinic where the frenulotomy was carried out.

Our Infant Feeding Development Midwife Annemarie has led on implementing this service since November 2016 in Lanarkshire and like yourself this is proving to be so essential to so many mums and babies.

I will share your thanks with all staff involved and I know they will be very humbled that you have taken time out in your busy life to tell us how much this meant to you both.

Enjoy the many happy days ahead.

Best Wishes

Wendy
