What I liked
I attended the minor incident department at Newquay Hospital on Bank Holiday Monday with my young son who had a head injury.
Although the minor incident unit was small it was very busy. We were greeted by the friendly and helpful receptionist who took my sons details, due to his distress she sat us in a side room as the waiting area was very crowded and noisy, she informed the Nursing Team that we were there as a nurse came to check on him to make sure he was ok before his main treatment began. As it was so busy the waiting time was lengthy however the receptionist check on him several times before being treated to make sure his condition hadn't deteriorated and too keep us informed of the waiting time, she was very bubbly talkative & helpful.
He was finally treated by a male nurse who was very charming, kind and caring, and gave my son his full attention, the time spent treating with my son wasn't rushed and we had a choice in the treatment he recieved. My son really felt at ease.
Due to my sons head injury he was referred to the main A&E hospital in Truro, however the treatment he received at Newquay was second to none, and I would not hesitate to return should the need arise. They have a good team at Newquay who work well together in a small environment.
What could be improved
The waiting room area should be bigger, it was far too small for the amount of patients waiting to be seen. There should also be some form of vending machine for both Drinks & Food/Sweets, the drinks machine they had in the waiting area down the corridor was out of order! Not good for the amount of people waiting in such hot cramped conditions.
When we return to Newquay and should the need arise, I would not hesitate in attending Newquay Hospital. They have a very friendly, caring team who work well together and obviously care about the work they do. My son is making a good recovery, and I would like to thank all staff concerned for the care & treatment he received.
