My mum was admitted to A&E in the early hours of Friday morning at 4 a.m 19/5/2017 by ambulance with chest pains and difficulty in breathing.
On arriving she was told by a member of staff that there was "no beds" and that she would have to wait in the A&E area, in a chair, for 7 hours and wait for a GP to see her. When I said that this is a disgrace, and that my mum was unable to sit up due to the pain that she was in, I was advised that there was patience outside in the waiting area that was much worse than my mum that deserves the bed before she did!.
We were told in the ambulance by paramedics that she would receive pain relief through an IV drip when she arrived at hospital, but due to the fact that there was no beds when we arrived, they would not give her any pain medication as in order for her to have an IV she was told, she would also need a bed. They also said they didn't want to give her any pain relief until she had seen the doctor in "7 hours time" when an appointment became available and that we had to go wait in the waiting area?
I understand that the NHS hasn't got very much money at the moment, and I also appreciate the fact that they are trying their best with the little facilities they have, but manners cost nothing. My mum was spoken to as if she was a child when she attended A&E, and was also told that she had wasted NHS time by calling an ambulance that cost over £100? They also said that they wouldn't be doing any blood work as they didn't want to waste the phlebotomist time and more NHS money?
Can I just say that we all pay our taxes, and we are all entitled to help should we needed in an incident as such as my mum's when you're unable to breathe and have chest pains. I don't feel that she should have been scrutinised having to have to ring an ambulance when she needed one, nor do I feel that she should have to wait in a chair without pain relief for 7 hours to see a GP because there was no beds available when she arrived at the hospital.
Due to this fact we had no other option but to go home, my mum coukdnt sit up for a minute let alone 7 hours, and I had to look after my mum myself. She needed to lay down and she needed some pain relief and in A&E walk in where she was sent she had none of that.
I now have a little faith in the staff at Arrowe Park Hospital, and the NHS, and if I can attend another hospital when I am seriously sick, or member of my family is then I/we will.
"Manners cost nothing!!"
