"Exceptional Care at The Royal Surrey"

About: Royal Surrey County Hospital / Accident and emergency Royal Surrey County Hospital / Colorectal surgery

(as a service user),

I was unfortunate enough to have an obstructed bowel recently but very fortunate indeed to be treated at the Royal Surrey, Guilford.

Much is talked about in the NHS about patient first, team work, outcomes and so forth, The Royal Surrey staff really do deliver on all of these and more.

During my treatment I experienced A&E, two wards, surgery and ICU and the huge variety of staff who work there and support all of these functions. Without fail they were professional, caring, attentive and focused upon the patient they were dealing with. The attitude to me was just amazing, from surgeons to portering staff, nurses, physics, radiologists and a new role to me, with an impossible to remember title, a specialist senior nurse who followed up on those of us following the A&E “pathway”, she was remarkable in every way.

The staff at Royal Surrey go the extra mile, the porters who warn of a “bump coming up” or being about to turn. An A&E sister who having transferred me to a ward came to my bed to say goodnight and wish me well. The duty surgeon who caught up with me at several points during my stay to see what had happened. The “pain nurse” who cleaned a toilet with the speed of light, not because I asked but because she saw it needed to be done.

Royal Surrey has a real team and people who care.

The Royal Surrey takes all of the jargon and hopes for excellence and puts it into action giving the patient, someone at their most vulnerable, an excellent experience.

I have great hopes for The Royal Surrey Hospital organisation’s future having observed the way in which student nurses are being inducted into this remarkable patient centred and professional culture which runs 24/7.
