"Staff knew their stuff"

About: Ninewells Hospital / General Surgery

(as a service user),

I had waited 9 years for knee replacement surgery because it seemed so final and I was scared, especially about infection. I had a cousin who died following an infection by one of those flesh eating bugs, so perhaps this affected me.

Ninewells is a clean and tidy looking place, no broken heaps of equipment gathering dust under the staircases and no dirty corners in the ward. I felt reassured by this and by the professional attitude of the staff. They were friendly and kind, but most of all, they knew their stuff. It enabled me to relax and feel safe.

Well, the operation is a painful one, but I had had years of pain already so I coped with it and could ask for extra painkillers when it was bad. I was able to get up and totter around on a zimmer frame within hours and I had a shower the next morning, which felt great. I did the exercises and they helped.

The food was good, the ward was well run and comfortable and the staff were so good that I am now facing the second knee being done with no fear. I would recommend this hospital and my wonderful surgeon. Mr Sripada is a star!
