I spent some time in Ward 8 this month after been given tablets (in EPU) to bring on a missed miscarriage and sent home. These subsequently caused me to heamorhage badly at home and needing paramedics to bring me into A&E. Unfortunately A&E were incredibly busy and the decision was made to wait for a Dr from gyneacolgy to come and examine me, this took 2 hours and in that time I collapsed again. It sudenly became apparent I was far sicker than anyone had realised and after seeing a consultant, the decision was made I would have surgery that night and was moved to ward 8.
A further collpase on ward 8 and we went to emergency surgery within 30 mins due to blood loss.
I can't praise the staff in Ward 8 highly enough, they treated me with such kindess and compassion, the care they took was amazing and I felt like a human being who was being listened to for the entire time I was there. All the staff on there were all just amazing.
The ward was spotlessly clean, everyone was treated with dignity and respect in an incredibly busy environment.
The ladies who came round with food orders etc were also absolute stars, everyone single person made the time for a quick couple of words which was much appreciated.
I would say that the process of sending people home immediately after being given the tablets to induce miscarriage seems short sighted. I was lucky my husband worked from home so I wasn't on my own, had I have been the alternative doesn't bear thinking about. In an ideal world it would be good to be able to monitor people for a couple of hours after administration of these drugs so early intervention in the event of that kind of bleeding can prevent the emergency situation I found myself in and subsequent numerous bags of saline and blood transfusions needed.
Our heartfelt thanks to all the team on ward 8, you made a genuinely terrifying and traumatic experience a huge amount better than it could have been. Please don't ever change, you're all superstars.
"Incredible care, compassion and kindness"
