What I liked

my 6 year old son was transfered to picu from our local hospital after going into septic shock following an operation. the staff stablised him and he was then moved onto grand union where both peadiatric & orthapedic doctors were very informative & kind. the nurses on this ward were fantastic even when understaffed. my son had numerous opperations unfortunately in one he had complications & had to go back into picu where the doctors & nurses were fantastic with him. my son needed a considerable amount off pain relief to which the pain team were great at getting his pain under control. after 2 weeks we were moved back onto grand union where the staff were once again fantastic. we were allowed out just in time for my sons (& his twins) birthday. unfortunatly my son has had setbacks & he has had to go back on several occaisions where we have been on both grand union & great western wards the staff have been great.also the play staff on all the childrens wards were great. i feel that i have made some new friends at a very very stressfull time & my family would like to thank everyone involved in my sons ongoing treatment .

What could be improved

after one of my sons opperations in recovery my son was in extreme pain but the nurses did not seem to understand or care.it was only that one off the peadiatric doctors came down to see how he was doing & imediatly took over the responsabilaty for his pain relief & the correct ammount of morphine was given. on another occaision my son was on a morphine pump that was not replaced after surgery again leaving my son without the crrect pain relief.more care needs to be taken to ensure that patients are given the correct care in recovery as all patients are different withhdiffering needs.

Anything else?

one of the annesthetic teams are fantastic with my son who gets very stressed when going into theatre. they remember him & always make a point of joking with him & putting him at ease.well done that team please take a look at this team & learn from them. one time on our way to theatre an anethetist on their way home stopped & came back 7& went in with him saying he was like one of the family.
