"Maternity labour and ward after"

About: The Royal Victoria Infirmary / Maternity care

I had my son four years ago and keep getting asked if I would recommend the RVI. First off am first 17 hours of labour the staff were great and really looked after me, they all kept calm and help keep me cram when complications arrived 9am my son was born , they gave come and my husband breakfast which was really nice. Could not fault from start to moving to the ward.

Moving on to the ward I was put in a room with no one else my son would not feed tried breast feeding But we had major problems and No one helped me. I had an epidural so was told not to try to get up till they said it was ok, 12 hours later still waiting sitting in a big pile of blood. I got up as my son needed milk I was never checked on or anything I put my dressing gown on and went to the desk to see if I could have a bottle for him as he was not drinking they turned around and said no that was your responsibility to bring it,. So rang my husband who could not come in to morning asked them if they could keep an eye on him while I nipped in the bath as I was covered in blood. They said no just leave him there. Two days later still at hospital kneeling on the floor in pain a midwife comes in and says what you doing. I was a bit sarcastic with them so an hour later I get a psychiatrist coming around to speak to me who was lovely if not a bit puzzled explained I was in pain and the psychiatrist was shocked I had not received any medicine or anything and still had the drip tube thing in my arm, I was also not told up to this point I was bordering needing a blood transfusions.

I was released a day later, waited 8 hours to be discharged then they did not have the medicine I needed to take home with me and daily injections ect . I was later told by my midwife I should have had these injections from the day I had My son not ,waiting till 6 days later. Also more to this but keeping short.

Safe to say would not recommend the ward but delIver was great.

Thank you for providing us with this important feedback regarding your experiences four years ago with the birth of your son. Whilst we are very happy to hear that you had a very positive birth experience we are concerned and wish to apologise that the time you spent in the postnatal ward did not reach the high standards we aim to deliver.

We note that your comments appear to relate back to care you received around 2013. There have been some significant changes made to postnatal care in this time, much of which was as a direct result of learning from feedback such as yours and we would like to offer you the opportunity to speak to one of our Senior Midwifery Team if this is something you feel willing to do.

If you would like to discuss your concerns further, please contact Midwifery Administration on 0191 282 5666 and we will be happy to arrange to meet with you personally to discuss any of the concerns mentioned.
