"Quick thinking and taking the ownership"

About: Scottish Ambulance Service / Emergency Ambulance Victoria Hospital / Gastroenterology

(as the patient),

I had started to pass blood from from the early hours on the 3rd April and by the time that the wife has seen me at 8am, I had lost a lot of blood by this point and first of all GP, realising then that when I was not able to walk that this was more than a GP issue and dialled for a ambulance to come out and a rapid response vehicle come out and the person name was called Jim that come in it. I was coming and going the whole time, so was not aware what was going on the hole time. Once Jim look at me, a quick decision to call for an ambulance was required to take me into hospital. Jim continue to work on me even after the ambulance arrived, which was not long. Jim was also there when I was taking out to the ambulance and stay to help in the back of the ambulance until he was happy that I was stable enough to go into A&E. The hard work that Jim done at the beginning I believe was what why I was able to make a recovery well enough to be out in three days. On iron tablets now to bring up the iron level and the camera test a few weeks later did so 4 ulcers which by that time were healing up. Samples were taking just in case. No word has come back from these.

Dear Rescue me

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience. It sounds like this must have been a really frightening experience for you and your wife.

I was really glad to hear about the care that you received from Jim. As well as the care that Jim provided, what it is really interesting to me about your experience is the importance you placed on Jim staying with you when the ambulance arrived, in your house and in the ambulance. As a Paramedic responder myself, I know that there are often clinical reasons that make it necessary to stay and assist the ambulance crew. This can sometimes involve travelling in the ambulance to hospital as well. Having said that, all of our staff are highly trained and so often there is no clinical reason to stay. However, I am not sure if I have ever truly considered this from a patient experience perspective. I certainly will in the future and will also share this with my colleagues.

I would also really like to pass on your thanks to Jim but would need a few more details about the call to allow me to do this. Can I ask you to contact me on 0131 314 0003 or martinesposito@nhs.net.

In the mean time I am so glad to hear that you are now recovering and receiving specialist care to ensure that the cause of your illness is confirmed.

Thanks again for sharing.

Take care

Martin.

Dear Rescue Me

I share Martin's sentiments and am glad to hear you are on the road of recovery. If you contact me directly and provide me with your details, I could follow up the results issue if that would be helpful?

Kind Regards

Louise
