"My experience of A&E"

About: Pilgrim Hospital / Accident and emergency

(as the patient),

I cannot say, in any way other than terrifying! I honestly believed that I would die in there.

In my opinion, due to appallingly disgraceful lack of basic care and treatment, I came in with a bleed from a stoma, and ended up with septicaemia, candida, brain fungal infection and in a coma! My family were told I was not going to survive, when they eventually took me from the general ward to the icu ward, after my family had been begging them to take me there.

I feel there was a catalogue of incompetence, and lack of duty and basic care, from being left lying in a bed full of faeces for hours with an abdominal wound covered in faeces! Because the nurse couldn't change me: too busy!

I could go on and on and on but to be honest I am getting to upset just writing this and haven't even scratched the surface of all that happened to me in there! My family who were over a 100 miles away from the hospital (as I was on holiday when I took ill) were at there wits end and where constantly complaining about the lack of care. I have now been left on TPN which is my only form of nutrition and am expected to be for some time yet. I will be making a formal complaint.

Thank you for your response, I do need to speak to you with regard to the sub standard level of care I received during my horrific admission to the pilgrim hospital. As I said in my post I only scratched the surface of the catalogue of negligence and lack of basic care. Alot of it the hospital confirmed was because they were severally short staffed!

My husband and family are still shocked by the level of care I received and are available to confirm this, as they saw it all first hand! As I am still poorly I will try to call you for your advise tomorrow afternoon say 3pm? I await your response.

Hi Lu-lu

I'm not sure if you will get this message this morning. Could you email me your contact number to patient.experience@ulh.nhs.uk and I can then give you a call.
