"Our son and his appendectomy."

About: Leeds General Infirmary / General surgery

(as a parent/guardian),

Our son, was admitted to L42 recently. We immediately felt at ease as we were welcomed onto the ward. We met his consultant, Mr Dawrant, the next morning and he was 95% sure he had appendicitis. He requested a scan to confirm but placed our son on IV antibiotics as a precautionary measure. Once confirmed Mr Dawrant and the nursing staff were amazing. Our son needed to be catheterised on his first night as the pus (from his burst appendix) wasn't allowing him to urinate. The surgeons and nurses made this process as easy as possible by allowing my son to know exactly what was happening. He was given the real human touch.

Bradley went into theatre to have a drain inserted to hopefully eliminate the collection and return back later for the appendectomy. Unfortunately this didn't work and 10 days after being admitted our son was taken back to theatre for the procedure. My Dawrant was conducting the surgery and as a result I felt very calm because he had my trust 100%, he's a very special man indeed. He cared for our son not only on ward rounds and in theatre but also by visiting his bedside, without request, throughout our 18 day stay.

After surgery our son had a stomach and wound drain, a catheter, PNT through his pick and was very sore. The nurses were amazing. As every line was removed the nurses kept him calm and pain free. They really led him to recovery. Along with caring for our son they also cared for me. Dot, in particular, became my guardian angel. Every question I had she was there, every emotion I showed she was there and every hug I needed she gave. She is a very, very special lady.

I also need to give my upmost thanks to Laura (who again was on hand with hugs), Rose, Mel (who somehow managed to complete a makeshift collection pocket from a colostomy bag when our son began to drain at the side of his drain), Heather, Claire, Tora, Gina, Sara, Debbie (an amazing sister which kept my wellbeing in mind throughout), Laura and Lucy. These nurses are much more than that they are angels. They helped my boy back to health and I will be eternally grateful for that. They have become very special people in our lives and we'll never forget them.

We will see L42 again but only to visit (with biscuits) the amazing people on there!
