I was booked as an inpatient for a hysteroscopy this afternoon and travelled through from inverness on the 7. 09am train to be admitted at 11am. Arrived on the ward when the nurse started to clerk me in only then to be told by a Registrar that my operation had been cancelled due to lack of theatre staff. This is the second time this has happened as my previous date was cancelled back in March and I am now breaching the 12 week guarantee time. This is totally unacceptable to be cancelled at this late stage and especially after travelling so far fasted. I was told that they were not aware of how many theatre staff were available until this morning but I know from experience of booking theatre in another health board area in the past that theatre lists and staffing levels are checked and confirmed at least 24 hours in advance, so do not insult my intelligence by trying to fob me off with a story line this. The Consultant had tried to transfer me into another theatre list but I was told this was not possible. Why was I left to travel so far before being cancelled and why have I been cancelled for second time? This has a knock on effect on future fertility treatment where I was advised by another Consultant last September that I would need this done before any further embryo transfers. This whole situation is not good enough and I want answers as to why I have waited so long and why I have now been cancelled twice and how this morning's disaster was allowed to happen. I am currently sitting on the ward waiting for the Consultant to come and speak to me and will not leave until I have another date which is confirmed that it won't be cancelled. It is not good enough! The emotional impact on coming into hospital is bad enough without having to deal with this. I am not stranded in Aberdeen as my relatives were not due to escort me back to inverness until tomorrow. More added stress of now trying to find a bus or train to get back home at added cost!
