"Being busy is not an excuse to be rude"

About: Dumfries & Galloway Royal Infirmary

(as a service user),

I was a patient in ward 16, In a four bedded ward. It concerned me as a nurse that patients had to wait nearly 2 hours for pain relief. One patient had asked for breakthrough pain relief after being advised to do so by night shift nurses. She had to wait two hours because nurses were busy! I myself had to wait an hour when I asked for breakthrough medication.

When I buzzed I was told  as a nurse I know how busy they are? ! I know exactly how busy nurses are but its no excuse for staff to be a it rude and not give patients their pain relief.

Also when I came back from theatre a student was assigned to look after me not once did she check my wound which had been bleeding. I had to ask the student ' do you want to check my wounds? ' 3 times. Sorry, but this is basic care along with checking observations. It worries me that the staff did not observe the students.

Dear Bootsy,

Thank you for taking the time to share your story with us. I am sorry to hear of your experience, particularly around the delays in receiving pain relief and wound checks. That must have been concerning for you.

I am keen to follow up your concerns with the team and I will need a little more information from you to help me do so. I would be most grateful if you could please contact us on 01387 272733 or by email at Dumf-uhb.PatientServices@nhs.net to let us know when you stayed on the ward. This information, along with your contact details, will help us to progress the issues raised.

Thank you
