I went to RLI for an elective c-section. I felt secure from the outset. I was welcomed onto the ward and shown the facilities. I was visited by the anaesthetist and consultant ahead of my c-section and felt comfortable to ask any questions. In the theatre and I was met by a fantastic team who went out of their way to explain procedures to me with good humour and make me feel relaxed.
A c-section wasn't my preferred choice of delivery as I was concerned that it would compromise the bonding with my baby but it went smoothly and I was able to have the skin to skin contact I wished for very quickly. My newborn latched on for her first feed whilst we were in the recovery room - a good indication of how relaxed we both were.
My midwife was brilliant and supported me with this first feed and also went out of their way to show us the placenta which we had requested to see.
Back on the ward I was still numb from the procedure and the most vulnerable that I have ever been. I was treated with immense care and dignity. I was given the buzzer and instructed to use it to enable my own and my baby's needs to be met. Throughout the night the midwives checked on me and passed my baby to me so that I could feed her.
The ward has a day room with tea facilities which patients can access at all times and also chat with other new mums. It was lovely to be be able to do this once my numbness has worn off.
I cannot sing the praises of all of the staff I met highly enough. Thank you so much.
