"Staff very good but age needs to be a..."

About: Royal Lancaster Infirmary / General medicine

I got asked to attend the hospital after falling ill with a kidney infection that wasn't responding well to oral antibiotics.

For three out of the four days I was in the hospital I had a side room and this was fine because I was pretty much left to my own devices and ignored which is how I like it and for the first time ever I was able to sleep in the RLI. Eventually they needed my side room and I was moved onto a ward of four. They main lights give me migraines so I closed my curtains and tried to keep myself to myself. Unfortunately the other people on the ward needed far more care than myself and no amount of my earphones and music all night kept out their calls for the nurse and what ever else instead of pressing the buzzer.

Every time I have to stay in this hospital it becomes more and more apparent that the wards should not be divided up into a more logical system other that there's a free bed just go there. It should be broken down into age and or ability to look after themselves and the needs of the patient. Otherwise you want to leave hospital before you yourself are completely ready to simply go get a nights sleep or even an hour of peace.

Even when they say you are able to be discharged that day it still takes 7 hours to get all the paperwork in order and then you are never actually told what time it will be so you can't arrange anything with anyone to come and get you, then you feel like you are bed blocking while you wait for your lift because you are going home you are no longer a priority but it would be nice to be told you can arrange for psomeone to come and get you at x time then your aren't sat around.

The best meal I had while I was in was a jacket potatoe everything else was pretty much tasteless. The egg mayo sandwich was just that tasteless it's not hard to make egg mayo it hints that it has mayonnaise in it but this didn't. The roast pork on the Sunday was mainly fat and had very little actually edible meat on it. I had to ask my partner to bring food in for me so I actually had something to eat.

I was in over the weekend when the cyber attacks happened on the NHS and the staff were fantastic all things considered. They were under a lot of pressure and handled everything with a calm air.

Overall staff are fantastic but I think that people are allocated to wards needs to be looked at. Either by age or health condition or by how much time they take up with the nurses. The lower need patients shouldn't be ignored like the are now.
