"Disgraceful"

About: Northwick Park Hospital / Accident and emergency

My mother who is 81 years old had a TIA (a mini stroke) while at Northwick Park Hospital on 4 May. She was attending a routine appointment at St Mark's Hospital when the TIA occurred at 10.57am. The doctor did not even notice that the TIA was in progress followed by a cardiac event straight after until I drew their attention to it. My mother was put up in the cardiovascular day unit while the doctors scrambled to find a bed in A&E downstairs. She was made to sit in a chair for hours followed a series of tests which established a narrowing in the carotid arteries. A bed was finally found at around 16.00. Eventually, she was discharged from hospital at 23.00 without medication or a treatment plan. Surgery to deal with the carotid stenosis to reduce the risk of a full stroke was refused. She was sent home in a complete shock. This hospital should be ashamed of itself. The stroke unit is a disgrace!

I am sorry to hear about this very difficult day and hope your mother is recovering well. It sounds like it might be helpful to have a clinic appointment to review your mother's condition and discuss the options for treatment and management?

Please contact the PALS team on 0208 869 5118 if you would like some help with arranging this.

Best wishes

Sue
